What can I do to put moisture back in my hair?

I had chemo treatments 12 years ago, before that I had curly short hair, since then, my hair is now down to my bottom and is just frizzy. What can I do to make it look nice and healthy? Also, any suggestions for quick and easy hair styles would be great. Pony tails are getting old.

There are many circumstances that lead to dry hair. The excessive use of heat for styling, dry climate, dehumidifiers, lack of intake of certain fatty acids necessary for healthy hair and, lack of proper water intake are among the most common. It's important to determine exactly what's causing the dryness and begin to fight it at the source. Creating a 'hair mask' or deep conditioning treatment at home is easy and can usually be made with products you already have in your cabinets.

Here are a few to try:

Combining 5 tablespoons of olive oil with 2 eggs. Distribute throughout your hair and then cover with plastic wrap or a shower cap. After 15 minutes rinse with cool water. The oil/egg combination helps put moisture back into your hair while the cool rinse closes the hair cuticle helping it retain the moisture.

A mixture of 2 tablespoons of honey and 3 tablespoons of olive oil left on hair will perform the same moisturizing properties. The honey in the mixture helps tame hair and adds shine. Leave it on for 15 minutes and then rinse, again with cool water.

Dry hair can be attained from the inside out by consuming food rich in omega-3 fatty acids at least twice a week. Salmon, herring and other types of cold-water fish are a good source.

Mayonnaise is always a good deep conditioner, but sometimes can be a little difficult to remove from hair. Rinsing with a solution of equal parts lemon juice and vinegar will help remove excess oil.

If you've got a supply of essential oils consider this mixture of six drops each of lavender, bay and sandalwood essential oils to six ounces of warm sesame or soy oil. Apply the mixture to the scalp, wrap your head in a warm towel and let the oils penetrate for 15 minutes. You may have to shampoo more than once to remove the oil but it works as a great deep conditioner and leaves dry hair soft and more manageable.

Olive oil by itself can be a great moisturizer for dried out over processed hair. Rub some in the palms of your hands and then massage into your hair. Shampoo as usual and rinse.

As suggested with the above recipes a shower cap or warm towel over any deep conditioning treatment works wonders because it allows the deep saturation of moisturizers into the hair. Rinsing with cool water after your regular shampoo and conditioner regime will help sealing the cuticle and give your hair great shine too.

Amazingly, while heat usually causes damage and results in dry hair, it can also help. For hair that is naturally curly there is always the tendency for it to be dry. Using a curling iron (either large or medium barrel) or straightening iron will help the hair to smooth out and loose its dry appearance. Like clothing, when hair is 'ironed' it retains the smoothness and becomes shiny as well. Avoiding excess alcohol in shampoos and conditioners as well as styling products will aid in prevention of excess drying to your hair. Last but not least, don't beat your hair up. Brushing, combing and excessive rubbing when towel drying can cause split ends and damage that results in dry, frizzy hair. Comb slowly and use a detangler if necessary. 2-for-1 - Mix a couple tablespoons of your conditioner with enough water for a loose consistency. Fill a spray bottle and use as both a tangle remover and leave-on conditioner.

The old treatment was mayonaise. If your hair is that long it'd take an awful lot. I'd cut it first.

Use moisturizing shampoos and conditioners. Also, you could try a hair mask, which is like a mud mask for your hair. As of good hairstyles for long hair, a side ponytail works very well. Bobby pins along your hairline look nice, as do fancy headbands.

I would say, do a HUGE trim on your hair

It may be a little unhealthy, and hair that length weighs itself down, and sometimes weighs your looks down too!

Maybe a mid-back length would be good if you still wanted to keep it long

John Frieda makes a great line of Frizz Ease products, to help with the frizz

As for a style, I have been taking my hair in a ponytail, pulling it through hair elastic half way, twisting to ends are facing the sky, and pinning them

great if your hair is curly...curls fall on top of your head, and down sides

or great if your hair is straight, texturize the ends with a little pomade to separate them, and it looks funky!

You can add a flower to one side of the pony/bun if you want!
