Changing Hair Roots?

When I was younger I had naturally very curly hair (near afro style) but as I have grown older my hair has become more straight.

Is there any procedure by which I can change my hair roots so that my hair will grow curly again - I do not really want to perm it all the time and it looks slightly odd when it is wavy,
